Back pain is one of the prevalent problems across the globe. Back pain in the lower lumbar region is called coccyx pain or tailbone pain. It is medically termed as coccydynia and is the result of injury of the tailbone during a fall on a hard surface or a blow on the coccyx bone during sports or some events. A possibility of injured or fractured coccyx bone during birth is also a cause for coccydynia.
Patients suffer from acute pain in the lower back region for years without knowing the definite cause of the pain. Lack of attention at the initial state may result in persistent and critical conditions. Patients who suspect coccydynia are advised to consult their physicians so that an early treatment can be given to avoid severe damage to the tailbone.
How can you identify the coccyx pain? Some of the eminent symptoms of coccyx pain in the tail bone region are increase in the level of pain on prolonged sitting, acute pain felt trying to stand up from a sitting position and a pain caused taking a seat on soft surface rather than a hard surface due to the pressure on the coccyx bone.
Other symptoms of coccydynia are pain around the coccyx area, lower spine numbness, pain in the leg and during bowel movement.
A relief for the symptoms may be attained by conventional medical treatments, but it doesn’t solve the root cause of the problem.
Physician advice and exercise to strengthen the muscles of the lower lumbar region are the best treatments for coccydynia. It is better to attend physiotherapy treatments than to go for a surgery unless the condition is acute.
