Ringing in the ear is a bizarre symptom for the health care professionals. It is medically labeled as tinnitus and is defined as the perception of sound within the human ear in the dearth of corresponding external sound. Buzzing, whistling, rustling, roaring etc., are some of the sounds perceived by the ear.

There are different causes for the ringing in ear. Prolonged exposure to loud noise, excess wax formed in the ear, ear infection and damage, foreign objects and nose allergies are some of the causes for tinnitus. Sinus and stress are also minor causes of ear ringing.

Tinnitus is called a bizarre symptom because without proper diagnosis of the fundamental cause, it is difficult to treat the ringing in the ear. Once the fundamental cause is found, otolaryngologist can obliterate the ringing or at least diminish it. Various tests and X-rays are carried out to diagnose the preliminary cause of tinnitus.

Drugs and nutrients, surgery, electrical stimulation and low pitch external sound are some of the treatments administered for ringing in the ear. If the cause is due to stress or any external triggers proper medication is given to avoid them. Some herbal and homeopathic treatments are found effective in controlling ringing of the ear to an extent.

Ear ringing masking device uses white noise to control the ringing noise of the tinnitus patients. There is no assured cure for tinnitus, but treatments that can relieve this ringing to an extent are available. It is better to consult an otolaryngologist when you have the above symptoms for an early treatment.
